how to clean silver

With this guide you are going to make your silver jewelry shine like the first day, but first of all we want to tell you that this method is not valid for gold-plated silver jewelry , since it can wear down the bath. If the piece you want to clean is made of gilt silver, we have another specific method for it below.

What do I need to clean silver?

  • Water
  • Baking soda
  • Salt (if you don't have bicarbonate)
  • Dishwasher
  • Toothpaste
  • Cloth
  • (optional) silver cleaning cloth

First step

Heat 1 small glass of water in the microwave until it burns, add a little bit of dish soap and a little bicarbonate (1 pinch). Mix everything for about 20/25 seconds. (You will see that the water turns black). Now insert the jewel and let it rest for approximately 1 minute. With this, what we achieve is to deteriorate the rust a little and make the following steps more effective. If your jewel is not apparently black, then go to the next step.

Second step

Now comes the turn of the toothpaste. Take a glass or small container and put some toothpaste. Add a little baking soda and a bit of water and stir the mixture until you get a creamy texture and make the baking soda grains disappear, as they could scratch your jewel.

Third step

We use the paste from the previous step and rub the jewel to clean it. It is important that we rub it with our hands. Surely the paste will darken as it will absorb dirt and rust from the silver.

Once we believe that we have cleaned the piece enough, we rinse it under water and verify that it has been well, if not, we can repeat this last step in the localized areas where there is still some dirt.

Other methods to clean black silver

How to clean silver with baking soda

This method for cleaning silver jewelry is well known, it has good results since a lot of silver can be cleaned at once, but it has its drawbacks. We detail them below.

To clean silver with this method you only need:

  • Water
  • Bowl
  • Foil
  • Baking soda
  • Used toothbrush or brush

First step. Line the inside of the bowl with aluminum foil while we heat the water. We will use enough water to fill the bowl.

Second step. Fill the bowl with hot water and put the jewelry that you want to clean inside.

Third step. Add one or two tablespoons of baking soda, depending on the size of the bowl. For 1L two tablespoons is fine.

We will see that it reacts, the water becomes white and little by little it will darken.

When the reaction is over we can remove the jewels and rinse them under water. After this it is recommended to polish the jewels with a silver clean cloth since after the reaction a dull shine remains.

The downside to this method is that baking soda can be embedded between chain links, in stone settings, and in bas-reliefs of designs. So if you decide to use this method, you will also need a used toothbrush or a brush to help you clean all these remains that may have been left.

Another way to clean black silver is to replace the baking soda with Salt. The steps to follow would be the same. For us, baking soda gives a better result, but if you don't have this product at home, Salt is a good way to clean silver at home.

How to clean gold plated silver

gold plated silver jewelry

Gold-plated silver jewelry is more complicated to clean when it gets very dirty, since silver-cleaning cloths cannot be used because they can wear down the gold layer.

This type of jewelry can get dirty due to sweat or creams that can create a film on the jewelry.

Anyway, we have a way to clean gold-plated silver at home easily. Simply take a small glass, fill it with warm water, add a little bit of dish soap and leave the jewel in for a few minutes. This method usually works very well, in case you resist you can come to any of our jewelry stores in Valencia or Madrid and we apply our special liquid to leave your jewel as when you bought it.

How to care for your silver jewelry

It is important to keep your jewelry clean and cared for to ensure its duration.

Once you have cleaned your jewelery or if you have purchased new Alvent jewelery online, we recommend the following tips to keep it in perfect condition.

  • Sterling silver jewelery can easily get wet, but if you take it off to change it or to rest your ear a bit, we recommend that you dry it well, the humidity can darken the jewel a little.
  • If you take off a jewel such as silver earrings , and you are not going to put them on for a few days, we recommend you keep them in your Alvent box, this way they will be more insulated from humidity.
  • Do not wet your gold-plated silver jewelry, if you ever do, nothing happens, but water, soap and chlorine speed up the disappearance of the gold layer.
  • If you have steel jewelry, maintenance is very simple, they can also get wet without the gold leaving. Another virtue is that they are hypoallergenic.

We hope this guide has served you and helped you clean your earrings, rings or any other piece of jewelry and you can enjoy them again.
