How to clean silver at home.

Our recommended method

With this guide you will make your silver jewelry shine like the first day, but first of all we want to tell you that this method is not valid for gold plated silver jewelry, as it can wear out the plating. If the piece you want to clean is gold-plated silver we have below another specific method for this one.

What do I need to clean silver?

  • Water
  • Baking soda
  • Salt (if you don't have baking soda)
  • Dishwasher
  • Toothpaste
  • Cloth
  • (optional) Silver cleaning cloth

First step

Heat 1 small glass of water in the microwave until it burns, add a little bit of dishwashing liquid and a little bit of baking soda (1 pinch). Mix (You will see that the water turns black). Now introduce the jewel and let it rest for about 1 minute. With this what we obtain is to deteriorate a little the oxide and that the following steps are more effective. If your jewel is not apparently black, go to the next step.

Second step

Now it is the turn of the toothpaste. Take a small cup or container and put some toothpaste in it. Add a little bit of baking soda and a little bit of water and stir the mixture until you get a creamy texture and make the baking soda grains disappear, as they could scratch your jewelry.

Third step

We use the paste from the previous step and rub the jewelry to clean it. It is important that we rub it with our hands. Surely the paste will darken as it will absorb the dirt and oxide from the silver.

Once we believe that we have cleaned enough the piece, we rinse it under water and check that it has remained well, if not we can repeat this last step in the localized areas where there is still some dirt.

Fourth and last step

Now that we have our silver jewelry clean and not black, we can polish it with a cloth, any cloth will do, because with this we are going to make a quick polish.

Make sure first of all that the cloth is clean because the dirt could scratch the jewel.

We also recommend using a silver cleaning cloth, which are prepared with a special product that in addition to providing shine keeps the jewel cleaner for longer. You can use our black silver cleaning cloth and add it to your order by clicking here.

We hope you already know how to clean silver to make it shine like the first day and this method has been convenient, fast and easy to do at home.

Other methods to clean black silver

Cleaning silver with baking soda

This method to clean silver jewelry is quite well known, it has good results because you can clean a lot of silver at once, but it has its drawbacks. Below we detail them.

To clean the silver with this method you only need:

  • Water
  • Bowl
  • Aluminum foil
  • Baking soda
  • Used toothbrush or brush

First step. Line the inside of the bowl with aluminum foil while heating water. We will use enough water to fill the bowl.

Second step. Fill the bowl with the hot water and put inside the jewelry you want to clean.

Third step. Add one or two tablespoons of baking soda, depending on the size of the bowl. For 1L two spoonfuls is good.

We will see that it makes reaction, the water becomes white and little by little it will darken.

When the reaction is finished we can take out the jewelry and rinse it under water. After this it is recommended to polish the jewelry with a silver cleaning cloth because after the reaction a dull shine remains.

The disadvantage of this method is that the baking soda can become embedded between the links of the chain, in the settings of the stones and the bas-reliefs of the designs. So if you decide to use this method, you will also need a used toothbrush or a brush to help you clean all the debris that may have been left behind.

Another way to clean black silver is to replace the baking soda with salt. The steps to follow would be the same. For us baking soda gives a better result but in case you do not have this product at home, salt is a good way to clean silver at home.

How to take care of your silver jewelry

It is important to keep your jewelry clean and cared for to ensure its durability.

Once you have cleaned your jewelry or if you have purchased new jewelry online from Alvent we recommend the following tips to keep them in perfect condition.

  • Sterling silver jewelry can get wet without problems, but if you take it off to change it or to rest your ear for a while, we recommend you to dry it well, the humidity can darken the jewelry a little.
  • If you take off a piece of jewelry such as silver earrings, and you are not going to wear them in a few days, we recommend you to keep them in your Alvent box, this way they will be more isolated from humidity.
  • Do not get your gold plated silver jewelry wet, if you ever do, nothing happens, but water, soap and chlorine accelerate the disappearance of the gold layer.
  • If you have steel jewelry the maintenance is very simple, besides, you can get them wet without the gold layer disappearing. Another virtue is that they are hypoallergenic.

We hope this guide has helped you to clean your earrings, rings or any other jewelry and you can enjoy them again.
